" I travel all over the world taking photos, including formula one and world cup football, and the Bikefest is the best event by far for atmosphere and the level of enjoyment the competitors are having"
Following the growing success of Bristol Bikefest the event will return to Ashton Court on the 6-7th June 2009 with the Kona Bristol Bikefest. Kona Bikes are on board again and supporting the Bristol and the Cheddar round of the Bikefest series. We will again do our best to make 09 even better and offer you the riders another enjoyable and challenging event.
Scorching sunshine, bone dry trails and the usual relaxed atmosphere welcomed more than 1600 riders to the Kona Bristol Bikefest 2008 when it opened its doors in June 2008.
The weather in the week leading up to the event plus the great work by the Bristol Trail Group as well as Ashton Court itself managed to create once more one of the best relay race courses the UK has to offer. Fast flowing single track mixed in with short sharp climbs and technical sections kept the riders on their toes for the duration of the event and the spectators cheering for more.
The setup:
As in 2008 we will run the 12 hour event on Saturday and the 6 hour event on Sunday with the 6 hour event aiming at both new to the sport riders who fancy a challenge and 12 hour riders who can’t get enough of the sweet Bristol singletrack. To accommodate young and new to the sport riders, we have added a separate 3 hour novice event to the Sunday running as well
On Saturday (12 hour) we will have solo, pairs and teams of 4 categories – all available in Teams Open, Team Old Gits (average age of riders needs to be 40+ years) and Team Single Speed) and Single Speed. The 6 hour Sunday race will have Teams Open, Team Old Gits (average age of riders needs to be 40+ years) and Team Single Speed) plus the addition of a separate 3 hour novice event.
The course:
The course being one of the best bits of the Kona Bristol Bikefest with its super fast single track and the scaffold bridge will get a few refinements but basically will stay the same.
The venue:
The event will be based at the top part of Ashton Court, Bristol.
As the racing starts at 9am, to make the best of the hot sunny June daylight times, most riders arrive on Friday afternoon to check out the course (open from 5pm onwards) and to ease into a action loaded cycling and camping weekend. As in 2008 there will be a DJ playing some tunes on Friday evening with a bar and food stands in the arena, ready to set you up for a weekend of flat out racing. Saturday night will see the main party with live music, DJ and bar.
For this first time in the history of the Bristol Bikefest we will have shower available for the competitors. We will also have two separate camp grounds. One next to the event village and start/finish area (same as in 2008) which doesn’t have the showers on site and is more likely to stay lively in the evenings and the other one which is a couple hundred yards from the event village but has showers (open to all riders) on site and is more likely to stay quiet in the evenings/nights. So in any case the start/finish as well as the showers are no more than a couple hundred yards away – no matter in which camp ground you are staying.
Spaces at both sites are limited. Please make sure that you enter early to guarantee that you will get a pitch at the Ashton Court camp ground (campground no.1) which is next to the event village. Late entries will be camping at Cotham Park Rugby Club which is just across the road but hosts the event showers. Please note that pre-booking of camping is essential and that marquees, easy-ups and gazebos need to be agreed by the organization.
